A rotary-screw compressor is a kind of gas compressor, such as an surroundings compressor, that uses a rotary-type positive-displacement system. They are generally used to replace piston compressors where huge volumes of high-pressure air are needed, either for large industrial applications or to operate high-power surroundings tools such as jackhammers and influence wrenches. For smaller sized rotor sizes the inherent leakage in the rotors becomes much more significant, getting less practical than piston types for smaller volume air compressors.
The gas compression procedure for a rotary screw is a continuous sweeping movement, so there is very little pulsation or surging of flow, as occurs with piston compressors. This also allows screw compressors to become considerably quieter and produce much less vibration than piston compressors.
